Dozens of Transit Tech Alumni Now Work at the MTA
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber met with students from Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn as part of the Partnership for New York City’s Career Discovery Week. The program introduces 3,700 public high school students from over 140 schools to the world of work and the extraordinary range of career choices that New York City employers offer.
About 30 students got the chance to tour Grand Central Terminal and meet with employees from New York City Transit, Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Rail Road and MTA Police Department to learn about their roles and how they came to work at the MTA.
“Native New Yorkers get how important the MTA is to our City and the appeal of an MTA career,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “In recent years we’ve made NYC schools – CUNY, SUNY, and DOE high schools – a primary focus of our recruiting efforts, and Career Discovery Week is another way to make New York kids aware of what the MTA has to offer.”
“The MTA relies on a wide range of employees in everything from engineering and security to train operations and customer service to keep New York moving,” said MTA Chief People Officer Mersida Ibric. “Today these students are learning from those employees and getting an inside look at what could be their future career.”
“Career Discovery Week offers New York City students a unique opportunity to explore the variety of career paths available in their own city,” said President and CEO of the Partnership for New York City Kathryn Wylde. “We thank New York City Public Schools, the MTA, and all participating organizations for bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace, and for helping these students make more informed decisions about their education and future careers.”
Since its relaunch in 2016, 77 Transit Tech alumni have been hired into the MTA’s Transit Electrical Apprentice Program
New York City Transit also hosted students at Zerega Bus Depot in the Bronx for a hands-on look at potential careers in engineering, mechanics and operating a bus.
