Update
Spring-Summer
2013

The installation of the $385 million Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signal system on the 7line icon Line is more than 43% complete. While we have begun installing critical components, such as conduits, fiber optic and signal cables and constructing Central Instrument Rooms for computer equipment, more work remains.

Upcoming work includes the building of relay rooms, installing track cases (signal relay boxes) and the continued upgrading of two major interlockings, the arrangement of signals and switches that allow trains
to cross from one track to another. Other work being done on the Flushing Line includes replacing track near Queensboro Plaza and infrastructure improvements and third rail replacement in the Steinway Tunnel, which links Queens and Manhattan.

Major benefits of CBTC will be more reliable service, more frequent service and countdown clocks. Service changes, including the weekend suspension of service between Queens and Manhattan, are being planned as the project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
