Service Returns to Lower Manhattan

After weeks of intense work to rehabilitate the previously decommissioned South Ferry Station, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) opened the terminal to passenger service at 5 a.m. Thursday, April 4 bringing line train service back to the tip of Lower Manhattan.

MTA Acting Chairman Fernando Ferrer and other MTA personnel were on hand at 8 a.m. to greet customers at the main entrance to the station adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

The old loop station is brought back into passenger service while the newer terminal station (opened back in 2009), which was heavily damaged by Superstorm Hurricane Sandy, undergoes extensive repairs.

As a reminder, the old South Ferry Station only allows for the first five cars of a train to platform. Customers coming from points north and terminating their trips at the old loop station are urged to use the staircase at the center of the platform to exit the station. Customers entering the station should use the main entrance adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry terminal.
