Line Weekend Work October 18-21, 2013
During the October 18-21 weekend shutdown of the Line between Queensboro Plaza and Times Sq-42 St, our maintenance workers and contractors accomplished several important tasks on multiple projects being performed on this vital link between Flushing, Queens and Midtown Manhattan:
Communications-Based Train ControlThe contractor began testing new track circuits by disconnecting and then reconnecting them in preparation for upcoming in-service testing. A track circuit is an electrical device used to detect the absence of a train on the rails. Also, negative cables and signal cases were installed along the wayside, case stacks (3” pipes) were installed and cables were pulled. Work also included the patching of tunnel wall niches.
Capital Track ProgramAs part of the in-house Capital Track Program, workers installed 250 new tie blocks with tie plates and new rails on the Main St-bound track at the Queensboro Plaza Station. Work crews also made cuts on old blocks for future removal at this location.
Outside of the Court Sq Station on the Manhattan-bound end, crews replaced 13 sections of track, and monthly inspection of the switches near the Hunters Point Av Station was completed. In addition, inspection of the Main St-bound and Times Sq-42 St-bound tracks between the Hunters Point Av and Queensboro Plaza Stations was completed and preventative maintenance was performed on the lubricating units on the curved section of track near Court Sq Station.
