Michael R. Coan was named Chief of the MTA Police Department in June 2008. Chief Coan is a 26-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, where he began as a patrol officer in 1982 and rose through the ranks to positions of increasing responsibility. He served as commanding officer of the Youth Division from 1994-98 and was a precinct commander from 1998-2002. After moving to Inspector/Counter Terrorism Coordinator in Brooklyn South in 2002, he was named Commanding Officer in the Public Information Division a year later. In 2006 Coan became Deputy Chief/Executive Officer in Manhattan South and in 2007 Deputy Chief/Executive Officer of the Detective Bureau, composed of 3,500 detectives and supervisors citywide. Chief Coan reports to Director of Security Douglas Zeigler. He graduated from St. John's University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
