Centennial Exhibition Showcases Subway Style

The current exhibition at the UBS Gallery, Subway Style: Architecture and Design in the NYC Subway, traces the evolution of the system’s design over the past century. Conceived as a great public work, the subway system melded innovative engineering with stylish architecture and interior design. The exhibition showcases examples of architecture, ceramics, metalwork, lighting, signage, furnishings, maps, fare collection, advertising, and rolling stock. The objects and images in the exhibition draw upon the New York Transit Museum's extensive collections of artifact and archival materials, as well as on a series of photographs of historic station ornament and design features.

Visit the exhibit through June 18 at the UBS Gallery, 1285 Avenue of the Americas between 51st and 52nd Streets. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m.to 6 p.m.

A full-color book by Stewart Tabori and Chang, Subway Style: Architecture and Design in the New York City Subway, will be published in October 2004. To reserve an advance copy, visit the Transit Museum store.
