Edge of Manhattan

Edge of Manhattan features the photographs of Jay Fine, who lives near the station and has focused his lens on the sights and scenes of Lower Manhattan. The exhibit showcases the places one sees from the edge of the city, at the water’s edge, from a marching band on a pier, to a solitary walk alongside the river, fireboats breaking up ice floes and the Staten Island Ferry emerging from a wall of clouds. Fine takes advantage of a high-rise vantage point to capture the shifting light and atmospheric conditions in NY Harbor. In his images, Lower Manhattan is not only a gateway to major historic tourist attractions, but it is where the river meets metropolis, with expansive vistas and a constantly changing sky. One image has series of lightning bolts seeming to hit the Statue of Liberty and another of the NYC swim marathon in the Hudson. Through these photographs he reveals the activities and places in our midst and the powerful forces of nature that surround us, at the Edge of Manhattan.

Jay Fine began a project in 2003 to document his surroundings, focusing on the NY Harbor, recording the sublime beauty and dramatic weather, as well as the architecture and people of Lower Manhattan. His work is widely published and he exhibits in New York.
