The best and most convenient way to buy tickets is to purchase them in advance. We also offer timesaving and convenient purchasing options that will save you money.

BUYING TICKETS
The best and most convenient way to buy tickets is by purchasing them in advance.
WebTicket
Buy your already discounted Monthly ticket online through WebTicket and avoid waiting on line. Use any major credit card. Postage is free and tickets arrive two to three business days after you place your order. Purchase your monthly tickets by the 26th of each month.
(Please note: Customers traveling to/from Connecticut stations receive a 2% discount on their monthly ticket when purchased through WebTicket.)
Mail & Ride
Join
Mail&Ride and enjoy the convenience of our monthly ticket-by-mail subscription service. Save 2% when you purchase a joint Monthly Ticket/Monthly Unlimited MetroCard. You can manage your account online, and pay using a number of convenient options.
(Please note: Customers traveling to/from Connecticut stations receive a 4% discount on a joint Monthly Ticket/Unlimited Monthly MetroCard Mail&Ride ticket and a 2% discount on all other Mail&Ride tickets.)
Ticket Offices and Ticket Machines
Buy a one-way ticket at one of our ticket machines or ticket offices before boarding the train and save $5.75 to $6.50 compared to the on-board price. You can use cash, a major credit/debit card, and, when purchasing at the ticket office, personal check, and transit card/voucher. All ticket types are available at our machines.
On Board Trains
Purchasing your ticket on board the train is a cash-only transaction and the most expensive option. It costs between $5.75 and $6.50 more.
Commuter Benefit Programs
Ask your Human Resources Department if your company offers tax-free transit fare programs. You can save 33% or more a year by having a portion of your pre-tax salary set aside for commutation costs.
Peak fares are charged for travel to and from Grand Central Terminal (GCT) or Harlem-125th Street Station. Peak fares apply to weekday trains that arrive in GCT between 5 AM and 10 AM or that depart GCT between 4 PM and 8 PM. Peak fares are also charged for travel on any weekday train that leaves GCT between 5:30 AM and 9 AM.
Off-peak fares are charged at all other times during weekdays and all day Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Some ticket types feature discounts. Those discounts are based on the ticket prices available at the train station. To receive the full value of these discounted tickets, be sure to make your purchases in advance, either at the station or online.
Remember: The fares for all tickets purchased on board the train are always significantly higher
MetroCard
Some ticket options may be purchased with a MetroCard on the reverse side.
- Round-trip tickets may be purchased with a $4.50 MetroCard on the reverse side.
- Monthly tickets automatically come with a MetroCard on the reverse side. You can choose to add value to the card at the time you purchase it or at a later date. Pre-valued MetroCards can be purchased the following ways:
- All ticket machines and ticket offices offer separate $20 MetroCard ($21.40 value).
- Ticket offices and full-service (gray colored) and electronic-payment only (blue colored) Tickets Machines offer MetroCard options with Round-trip tickets ($4.50 value); and Monthly tickets ($45 MetroCard; $48.15 value).
One-Way Peak
Peak-period single ride to/from Manhattan. Can be used off-peak. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase). If you are going to be traveling for more than one day, consider a multiple-ride ticket, such as a Ten-Trip or Weekly.
One-Way Off-Peak
Off-peak single ride to/from Manhattan; save 25% off the regular one-way peak fare. Subject to fare difference if presented on peak trains. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase).
One-Way Intermediate
Good for travel between two stations outside of Manhattan on the same line. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase).
One-Way UniRail
Connecticut customers can purchase a Shore Line East one-way ticket and a Metro-North one-way ticket in one quick transaction at any ticket office or ticket machine.
Round-Trip
Any combination of two one-way tickets (peak/peak; off-peak/off-peak; peak/off-peak, etc.). May be purchased with a $4.50 MetroCard on the reverse side. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase).
Yankees-E.153rd Street Station Game Day Fares
One-way, Round-trip, and Ten-trip fares are available for Harlem and New Haven Line customers transferring at Grand Central Terminal or Harlem-125th Street Station for a train traveling to Yankees-E. 153rd Street Station (or on direct Harlem and New Haven trains to Yankees-E. 153rd Street). Fares are slightly higher than fares to Grand Central Terminal and are purchased on a single ticket. Harlem and New Haven Line Monthly and Weekly ticket holders (to or from Manhattan) can travel to or from Yankees-E. 153rd Street Station at no extra charge.
Seniors/Disabled Persons/ Medicare Recipients
Fifty percent off the full one-way peak fare. You must be 65 years of age or older to qualify as a senior citizen. Proper identification required: driver's license, Medicare card, or MTA Reduced-Fare MetroCard/Disabled Persons identification card. A birth certificate can also be used, but only in conjunction with another form of identification. Not valid on inbound morning peak trains. Senior citizens, disabled persons, and Medicare recipients who show the proper identification may purchase tickets on board the train without paying the higher on-board price. May also be purchased as a Round-trip without a $4.50 joint MetroCard. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase).
Child Fare (5-11 years old)
Save 50% off the applicable adult fare for children, or as outlined in Family Fare. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase).
Family Fare
Pay no more than $1 each for up to four children (ages 5 to 11) with a fare-paying adult (18 years or older). The fifth child and all other children pay Child Fare. Not valid on inbound morning peak trains. Valid for 60 days (including day of purchase).
CityTicket
Pay $3.75 for travel within New York City on Hudson/Harlem Line trains on Saturdays/ Sundays. Ticket is only valid on the same day of purchase and cannot be combined with other tickets. Ticket must be purchased at ticket windows or ticket machines located in the Bronx and Manhattan; it cannot be bought on board trains.
Spend less time waiting on line by purchasing multiple-ride tickets in advance of your trip.
Weekly
Unlimited rides for a calendar week (Saturday through Friday); save 30% (based on 10 one-way rides per week) off one-way peak fare. Most cost-effective for commuters traveling for this continuous seven-day period. Weekly tickets are non-transferable; the first person to use this ticket is the only person who can use it. This ticket can be purchased up to eight weeks in advance through WebTicket. Weekly tickets go on sale at ticket offices and ticket machines beginning on Wednesday for the following week. The deadline for purchasing all weekly tickets through WebTicket is midnight on the previous Sunday. This ticket will be inspected periodically by train crew members.
Monthly
Unlimited rides for a calendar month; save 50% (based on 42 rides per month) off the one-way peak fare. Most cost-effective fare for daily commutation. All Monthly tickets go on sale at ticket offices and ticket machines the 20th of the previous month. All Monthly tickets go on sale through WebTicket the 1st of the previous month. Monthly tickets are non-transferable; the first person to use this ticket is the only person who can use it. This ticket will be inspected periodically by train crew members.
Ten-Trip Peak
Ten peak trips to/from Manhattan on one convenient ticket. Valid for six months from purchase date. Can be used by more than one person, even when they are traveling together.
Ten-Trip Off-Peak
Save 30-40% off one-way peak fare with ten off-peak trips to/from Manhattan. Valid for six months from purchase date. Can be used by more than one person, even when they are traveling together.
Ten-Trip Intermediate
Save an additional 15% off one-way intermediate fare. Ten trips between two stations outside of Manhattan on the same line. Valid for six months from purchase date. Can be used by more than one person, even when they are traveling together.
Ten-Trip Seniors/Disabled Persons/ Medicare Recipients
Ten Senior Citizen/Disabled Persons/Medicare Recipients trips at the 50% discount off the one-way peak fare on one convenient ticket. You must be 65 years of age or older to qualify as a senior citizen. Valid for six months from date of purchase. Not valid on inbound morning peak trains. Can be used by more than one person, even when they are traveling together, as long as they are all eligible for this special fare and present the required identification.
UniTickets
UniTickets (for use with a connecting service) or Double-Ended UniTickets (for use with connecting services at both ends of your commute) can be purchased with Weekly (not available for Westchester Bee-Line Bus) and Monthly tickets.
MetroCard
Round-trip and Monthly tickets are available with a MetroCard on the reverse side.
School Commutation
Discounted calendar month tickets for students traveling to and from primary or secondary school. An application for this discount (available from ticket agent) is required.
Group Travel
Groups of 10 or more can save 40-50% off regular one-way fare.
REFUNDS
One-Way and Round-Trip Tickets
One-way and Round-trip tickets (valid for 60 days, including day of purchase) can be refunded or exchanged for 60 days from purchase date.
Monthly and Weekly Tickets
If commutation tickets submitted for refund before their expiration, the discount is forfeited, and we must deduct the proper combination of one-way and/or weekly fares for the period the ticket has been in the customer's possession. (Lost tickets are not refundable.)
Ten-Trip Tickets
Ten-trip tickets (valid for six months from purchase date) can be refunded for 6 months from purchase date.
Refund Processing Fees
A $10 refund processing fee is charged for each refund transaction.
MetroCard portions of combined monthly MetroCard and train tickets are refunded subject to a $10 processing fee, forfeit of discount, and prorating.
