Beat The Heat With LIRR and Splish Splash
It’s one of those hazy, hot and humid days, you’re off from work and you want to get away with the kids – what to do? How about trying the LIRR’s very popular one-day package to one of the largest water parks around. Located in Riverhead, “Splish Splash” has been voted one of America’s top 5 water parks by the Travel Channel. The LIRR package offers a 27% discount and includes train fare, a shuttle bus and park admission. Enjoy such one-of-a-kind waters rides as the Dragon’s Den, the Hollywood Stunt Rider, Alien Invasion, Dr. VonDark’s Tunnel of Terror, and the Kahuna Bay Wavepool. There’s also Bootleggers Run, new this year. It’s a four-person raft that actually goes uphill with new-generation hydromagnetic technology. It flies like a roller coaster without rails. “Splish Splash” has 19 water slides, two wavepools, kiddie areas, two gift shops and a large food court. For more information see here or call 511 and say “LIRR.”
Be Your Own "Gatsby," Take the LIRR
You may see the movie this summer or you might have read the classic novel in school, but have you seen the storied Long Island locations? The LIRR Gatsby Mansion Getaway takes place on August 3. You’ll visit sites on Long Island’s Gold Coast, including the mansions of millionaire “robber barons” that inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald to write The Great Gatsby, including Old Westbury Gardens and the NYIT DeSeversky Mansion. The escorted tour includes rail, air-conditioned bus transportation and lunch. If you’re interested, call 511 and say LIRR, then “group travel.”
Even though the summer season has more than a month to go, the eastbound LIRR Hamptons Reserve service is a sell out through Labor Day, the last day of Reserve service until next season. Since its debut Memorial Day Weekend, the LIRR’s Cannonball from Penn Station express to Westhampton and the East End on Friday afternoons has been a big hit. The Hamptons Reserve cars, which offer reserved seating for an additional cost, are part of this train’s make-up. Although the eastbound Reserve is sold out this season, seats are still available on the westbound Reserve departing Montauk every Sunday at 6:37 PM, and of course general seating is still available on all Cannonball cars. Tickets are available at all open ticket offices and ticket selling machines. A word to the wise, however, is get to Penn Station early. The Cannonball’s departure time is 4:07 PM Fridays.

Bikes on the LIRR
Summer is bike time for many and the LIRR seeks to accommodate customers with bicycles whenever possible. Some bike policy highlights include:
- Each bicycle requires a permit
- Cyclists will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Restrictions on when bicycles can be brought onboard apply year-round and, during summer, there are additional exclusions on our busy Montauk Branch. However, we also designate “Bicycle Trains,” which are allowed to carry more than the normal number of bicycles.
Review our timetables and website carefully to plan your itinerary. These are only a few of the bike guidelines, please review the LIRR bicycle policy online.
Sorry, No Smoking (including E-Cigs)
We’ve received a number of customer inquiries in recent months concerning the LIRR policy regarding the smoking of electronic (or E) cigarettes on railroad property, inside and outside. Based upon the ban on tobacco and tobacco substitutes, smoking electronic cigarettes is also prohibited on LIRR property (inside and outside). Please remember to be considerate of your fellow riders.
June overall on-time-performance was 93.8%.
