Customers Can Pay by Credit Card Onboard in Pilot Program
During your ride this summer there’s a chance you may see one of your train crewmembers using a new device to take care of on-board ticket transactions.
The devices are called on-board ticket issuing machines (OBTIMS) and they’ll allow crewmembers to take credit and debit (debit cards only with the VISA and MasterCard logos) cards as fare payment. The roll-out this summer of 35 upgraded devices is the continuation of a pilot program begun in 2011. Crews on Montauk Branch and Greenport trains will be the first to have the new devices. The LIRR will take feedback on the pilot program from customers and crewmembers, as we consider expansion of mobile ticketing.
East Side Access Work Means Service Changes
After the All Star Game, work to build a concrete track slab will begin in the very busy Harold Interlocking as part of the East Side Access Project. Once complete, the slab will allow subsequent tunnel construction to proceed without impacting LIRR service. Eventually, the slab will support a westbound bypass track for Amtrak and LIRR trains, increasing capacity and reliability in this area.
This work will require some tracks to be taken out of service during July and August. Service impacts include the temporary cancellation of three westbound AM peak trains and two eastbound PM peak trains, along with schedule revisions for a number of other trains. The cancellations and timetable changes will be in effect from Monday, July 22 through Friday, August 16.
The three cancelled AM peak trains are:
- The 6:54 AM from Central Islip to Penn Station
- The 7:55 AM from Little Neck to Penn Station
- The 8:10 AM from Freeport to Penn Station
The two cancelled PM peak trains are:
- The 6:05 PM from Penn Station to Wantagh
- The 6:33 PM from Penn Station to Babylon
Stops will be added to other peak trains to accommodate customers affected by the cancellations. In addition, two AM peak trains to Hunterspoint Avenue (the 5:39 AM from Montauk and the 7:13 AM from Oyster Bay) will temporarily terminate at Jamaica. The 4:28 PM train from Long Island City to Patchogue and the 6:30 PM train from Hunterspoint Avenue to Port Jefferson will depart from Jamaica while the work is underway. Special brochures with complete details will be available in July at stations and terminals. Thank you for your patience as this project progresses.
Port Jeff Branch Track Work
A track tie replacement program between Huntington and Port Jefferson will mean bus service for weekday mid-day customers from June 24 through August 9. Affected westbound customers will board buses up to 24 minutes earlier than normal train times, then transfer to trains at Huntington to complete their trips.
Affected eastbound customers will board buses at Huntington for stations Greenlawn through Port Jefferson. Allow 26 minutes for extra travel time. Please note that bicycles are not permitted on buses. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we need to ensure that we renew our tracks for a safe, comfortable ride.
May overall on-time-performance was 93.94%.
