Long Beach is Back!
The LIRR and the City of Long Beach have teamed up to offer railroad customers some extra special deals in the wake of Sandy. “Long Beach is one of the Long Island Rail Road’s most popular beach destinations,” said LIRR President Helena E. Williams. “We know how important this beach season will be as part of the Sandy recovery process and that’s why we are pleased to be partnering with the City of Long Beach to offer LIRR customers extra values, including merchant discounts and bus/trolley shuttle transportation around Long Beach.”
Starting Memorial Day Weekend, LIRR Long Beach package customers will not only receive a discounted one-day round-trip ticket to this seaside city as well as discounted beach admission ($22 from NY and Atlantic Terminal, $18.75 from Jamaica), but will also receive discount coupons for nearly 30 local merchants plus free transportation on the Long Beach Loop buses, allowing customers to explore Long Beach from east to west. Long Beach City Council President Scott J. Mandel said: “We welcome everyone to join us this summer on the beach, in our restaurants and shops, and at our concerts and festivals. Long Beach is open for business. We are truly going to have a tremendous summer season.”
One lucky winner and guest will win a sun-filled Long Beach adventure; to enter the contest, visit www.visitlongbeachny.com. For more information, please visit our website and begin planning your Long Beach getaway today!
The LIRR continues its tradition of offering a special rail-bus package allowing families to honor their loved ones interred at Calverton National Cemetery on Saturday, May 25. The package includes round-trip transportation to the Cemetery. Prior to entering the Cemetery, there will be a stop at a florist so flowers, along with coffee and tea, may be purchased. Once inside the Cemetery shuttle buses will stop at pre-selected sections to enable participants to reach their sites more quickly. A “New” Massapequa Station
There’s some very good news for Massapequa Station customers, as a two-year $40 million major rehabilitation project of the 1950s-era vintage structure gets underway this month. Upon completion Massapequa customers will have a brand new station and improved service. The work includes replacement of the 12-car length platform, a new platform canopy, a new heated platform waiting room, a new elevator, a new escalator, replacement of the pedestrian walkway over Broadway, installation of energy-efficient platform lighting, improved signage, a new public address system, rehabilitated staircases, better drainage, and a decorative granite wall adjacent to the ticket office. The Railroad will also be adding a pocket track just east of Massapequa Station to help improve train service and frequency as well as on-board seat availability. The pocket track is one of several infrastructure improvements the LIRR is making in anticipation of the completion of the East Side Access project, which will enable Long Islanders to travel directly to Grand Central Terminal and the East Side of Manhattan for the first time beginning in 2019.
But along with gain comes inconvenience.
- During this work, there will be about 50 fewer parking spaces available on the south side of the station and near the east underpass in order to accommodate construction materials and equipment. As an alternative, Customers can use unrestricted parking at the west end of Seaford Station.
- The escalator will be closed for the duration of the work (through the summer of 2015).
- The elevator will be closed during the first phase (through this winter).
- Westbound customers must board the last six cars of their trains.
- Eastbound customers will board/exit in the first six cars.
Customers are advised to use the Seaford Station for elevator access. For questions or concerns, please visit mta.info/lirr and click on FAQs/Contact Us to send us an e-mail, or call us at 511.
