LIRR To Provide Additional Service for New Barclays Center

Barclays Center

The Long Island Rail Road is the best way to travel to and from the metro area’s newest entertainment and sports venue—Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn.  The 18,000 seat arena opens September 28th with the first of Jay Z’s series of concerts. Starting this month with Barclays Center opening, the LIRR will increase its late night train service from our Atlantic Terminal, just across the street from Barclays Center. The last train from Atlantic Terminal for concerts and special events (on both weekdays and weekends) will depart at 12:41 AM. The last train from Atlantic Terminal for Nets games will depart at 11:55 PM (on both weekdays and weekends). The LIRR will provide eastbound service approximately every 15 minutes from Atlantic Terminal on nights of games and special events.  For complete schedule details please consult the special Barclays brochureGo Nets!

Brooklyn Bound
Here’s a brief rundown of some of the acts/events coming to Barclays Center:

Mobile Ticketing Pilot Scores a Hole-in-One
The Barclays PGA Tour event at Bethpage Black scored big with golf fans. Almost 6,000 railroad customers took to their computers and smart phones before taking to the rails, purchasing their train tickets online, making the first-ever LIRR mobile ticketing effort a major success. The LIRR carried 30,000 customers to and from Farmingdale Station during the six days of the event, and 20% had an eticket in hand.  The mobile ticketing pilot program for the Barclays was provided by Long Island technology company CooCoo. The LIRR plans to expand ticketing options next year.

October Train Service Outages on Montauk & Port Jefferson Branches
Rehabilitation work on several rail bridges in the Hampton Bays area will mean no train service for Montauk Branch customers traveling east of Speonk for three days, October 16-19.  Buses will replace trains and customers will experience increased travel time of up to 40 minutes. A switch replacement project on the Port Jefferson Branch east of Hicksville will mean buses will replace trains between Hicksville and Huntington during the weekend of October 20-21.  Customers will experience up to 30 minutes additional travel time. Affected customers can consult the LIRR website for further information on both projects.

New Timetables In Effect
A reminder: if you haven’t yet, pick up your copy of the latest timetable that took effect September 4.  The new schedules include the return of the 4:34 PM eastbound train from Atlantic Terminal to Ronkonkoma, as well as adjustments to the schedules of the 4:24 PM train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma and the 4:31 PM train from Penn Station to Huntington.  There are also schedule adjustments due to weekend and midday weekday track work that will be taking place on the Babylon, Montauk, Long Beach and Oyster Bay branches.  The new timetables, dated  September 4 - November 11 are available at stations and terminals and, of course, on our website.

New Ticket Validity Period
As of September 4, the validity of one-way and round-trip tickets was extended from 14 days to 60 days, and the refund period for those tickets was extended from 30 days to 60 days. Ten Trip tickets remain valid for six months, but the refund deadline has been extended to six months to match the validity period. A $10 refund processing fee remains in effect to recoup some of the administrative expenses of issuing and mailing checks. For complete details pick up a copy of the Tickets and Fares brochure dated September 4, 2012 at stations and terminals.
