Supporting Reliable Service

As busy New Yorkers, it's easy to overlook many of the critical investments that make our system so reliable. The MTA Capital Program is investing over $8 billion in signals, track, power, pumps, drains, and thousands of cables and circuit breakers. All of these components need to work to get you where you need to go.

Pumps

Most of the New York City subway is under ground and below the city sewer system. Water comes into the system from underground streams, broken water main lines and areas with a high water table. Pump plants remove approximately 13 million gallons of water that enter the system on a dry day.

Did You Know?

Our subway system has an entirely separate power system for ventilation and station and tunnel lighting. This allows us to service the system and keep the lights on when power to the third rail is shut off.
