South Ferry Terminal Project
Project Description
Current Conditions
The existing South Ferry station, which is the southern terminal for the
(Broadway-7th Avenue) subway line, is used by more than 6 million people each year,
including commuters transferring from the adjacent Staten Island Ferry terminal,
and tourists visiting Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Islands.

The station was built in 1905, at a time when subway trains were much shorter than they are today. As a result, the platform can only accommodate the first five cars of each train, requiring customers in the rear cars to walk forward to exit, increasing the chance of train delays which can affect service throughout the entire
and
subway lines. It was also built as a single loop track, which limits the number of trains that can be stores (other subway terminal station have two or three tracks). In addition, the curvature of the platform requires the use of mechanical "gap fillers" to cover the space between the platform and the train door, and causes moving trains to generate excessive noise.

Other limitations include a single entrance and narrow stairs that cause congestion for customers entering and leaving the station, and no station access for customers with disabilities.
Planned Improvements

The reconstruction of the South Ferry Terminal will result in the relocation of the station platform and mezzanine to a new location underneath Peter Minuit Plaza and State Street. The rebuilt station will include the following improvements:
- A full-length platform that will accommodate two 10-car subway trains, allowing customers to board and alight from each subway car
- Additional station entrances to reduce congestion and provide better access, and provide improved access to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and Battery Park.
- A new free transfer between the
line at the South Ferry
Terminal and the
line at Whitehall Street station. - Station accessibility compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- The new South Ferry Terminal will be built with sufficient overrun track south of the platform to allow trains to safely enter at higher speeds.
- The crossover tracks north of the station will utilize state-of-the-art switching technology
- The overall design of the station will provide capacity for up to 24 trains per hour

When the reconstruction project is finished, the project benefits will include:
- Reduced Customer travel times
- Improved on-time performance and service reliability
- Improved station safety
- Enhanced customer environment
- Improved connectivity with other subway lines
- Potential for future service growth
- Support for the redevelopment of Battery Park & Lower Manhattan
