E-ZPass^® operates on a prepaid system, as our token programs do. You'll receive the same maximum discount available to you with tokens or tickets. You'll be able to use E-ZPass^® anytime, without restrictions.

Your E-ZPass^® will come with self-sticking fasteners, which you attach to the inside of your front windshield near the rear-view mirror. Installation takes about 5 seconds. A small number of vehicles may require an exterior tag. In particular, if your vehicle has a heated [instant deicing] windshield, please note this on your application. Thanks to the self-sticking fasteners, you can easily remove the tag, if you wish. You will have peace of mind of knowing that, much like the radios in many luxury cars, your E-ZPass^® will have little value if lost or stolen because it can be deactivated and invalidated by us. And just like a credit card, you will not be responsible for any further charges once you reported the loss or theft. You can't say that about lost tokens or cash! The E-ZPass^® is about the size of an audio cassette tape, and it contains a radio transmitter and computerized information exclusively identifying your account.

As you approach the toll plaza, look for the distinctive purple and white E-ZPass^® logo. At night, purple lights will help you find these lanes. These are the ONLY lanes where your E-ZPass^® is accepted. If you use other lanes, you will have to pay the full cash toll.

But, as a preferred customer, every toll plaza will have one or more lanes EXCLUSIVELY for E-ZPass^® customers. These lanes will have ONLY a purple and white sign, and are your best bet to pass through the plaza in the least amount of time. We'll add as many of these exclusive lanes as it takes to accommodate our E-ZPass^® customers.

As your vehicle enters the toll lane, the E-ZPass^® system will recognize your individual code. The appropriate discounted toll will be automatically deducted from your E-ZPass^® account, the gate goes up, and a green light will tell you to proceed. All this takes place in about two seconds, start to finish. You can use your E-ZPass^® wherever you see the purple and white E-ZPass^® sign at MTA Bridges and Tunnels toll plazas.
