TEMPORARY BRIDGE & TUNNEL OFFICER POSITION
(Immediate Needs for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge)

Salary: $12.85 per hour

Largest among the nation's bridge and tunnel toll authorities in terms of traffic volume, MTA Bridges and Tunnels serves more than a million people daily in the New York metropolitan area. As a constituent agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), its dual role is to operate seven bridges and two tunnels and to provide surplus toll revenues to help support public transit.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels seeks to recruit to maintain its pool of candidates for the position of Temporary Bridge and Tunnel Officer (TBTO).  While one of the primary duties of a TBTO is to collect tolls at any one of our nine facilities, they may also interact with customers and provide assistance, such as giving travel directions and traffic information and complete forms and reports. TBTOs are required to work schedules that include rotating tours which include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and must work mandatory overtime. TBTOs are a vital part of an 1800 member organization where customer service and safety for our employees and the general public are of great importance. To ensure that these goals are met, TBTOs must meet the following minimum qualifications:

• possess a valid unrestricted New York State driver’s license
• possess a U.S. Birth Certificate, U.S. Passport or Naturalization Certificate
• possess a high school diploma or GED
• be a New York State Resident
• must be at least 18 years of age
• not have any felony convictions or unsatisfied financial civil judgments
• pass a basic reading comprehension and mathematics examination

TBTOs are required to work in all weather and climate conditions and must be able to lift and to carry items of varying weight and size safely through toll facilities including lanes with active vehicular traffic.  To ensure that candidates can perform the essential functions of the position of TBTO and to ensure the safety of the individual employee, other MTA Bridges and Tunnels employees, and the riding public, MTA Bridges and Tunnels has established certain medical, physical and psychological qualification standards for TBTOs, including, but not limited to:

• vision standards
• depth perception
• hearing and speech standards
• cardiovascular standards
• manual dexterity
• strength
• agility
• full use of upper and lower extremities

 

All appointments are subject to a one year limit in accordance with applicable civil service law.
